Revisitation 80: Carry On Nurse.

This week, the US needs a hero. But can Spike get away from his medical rest long enough to help? And can Bumblebee stop crying long enough to be of any help?

It's all as I look at the final, for real this time, issue of All Hail Megatron!

Plus, the extraordinarily badly put together special bridging the gap between this and the relaunch, Transformers Continuum!

Pretty much nailed it, as ever. Having heard that a new writer was coming on board for the new ongoing series I was certainly more hopeful, given how much I’d loathes McCarthy’s work. It would be an understatement to say that those hopes were pretty much immediately dashed. “Man of Steel” is just awful. There’s literally nothing in it that makes it at all worthwhile, noteworthy or redeemable. What an advert for the coming era…

“Hidden” is… okay. Sure, the characterisation of Bumblebee was a little off, but given the inconsistencies introduced during McCarthy’s tenure it wasn’t that jarring for me. (And I’ve always preferred his G1 characterisation to his Movie/Animated portrayal - just because as a nerdy, unconfident kid I could relate to that more than the super-confident jock.) What was jarring was the fact that the characters were all drawn with their G1 models again, ignoring their earlier IDW bodies. But more of that to come. But it seemed fairly harmless, otherwise. Especially since I didn’t know that the forthcoming miniseries was meant to be aimed at kids.

But as an issue setting up the forthcoming ongoing series, this certainly does the exact opposite of whetting the appetite…

I don’t really recall how I felt about this issue back in the day.
Probably glad the whole AHM mess was finally over.

I do however recall feeling we were in a lot of trouble with Costa, after reading his first confused take on Transformers
back in AHM 13.
Which was nothing more than a really odd retelling, of the Starscream-Megatron inside Astrotrain scene, from the movie.
So I figured we were gonna get somebody who slavishly would follow the cartoon, again.

In fact we didn’t even get that.
We got somebody who briefly glanced at the movie, while walking past a TV playing it.
And only got the most basic idea of Transformers.

What we got in both AHM, and the 2009 series is the Energon TV series in comic book form.

A confused mess of a storylines, with plodding plot points that lead nowhere,
annoying characters,
stop-start storytelling,
and it all lurches to something resembling a conclusion, because the story just stops.

All AHM had to be, was the comic book equivalent of a summer blockbuster.
Big, dumb, fun action.
It got the big and the dumb right.
Along with the action but it dropped the fun along the way.
Right after coherent probably.

The 2009 series is just dumb.
And AHM16 is a very, very ominous harbinger, of what was to come.
