Transformation Titan 1: New Year's Bay.

The most succesful, and controversial, period in Transformers history is about to kick off as we arrive in 2007, a week before Bayhem kicked off.

It's all in my look at ISSUE 1 of the Titan movie comic!

Plus a quick recap of the events between 2003 and 2007 HERE.

I think the first idea behind the BW comics is a good one - some guys have gone looking for the show characters, have related adventure that broadens the scope but isn't tied to the completed cartoon. When it's Razorbeast's plucky band on the run from Magmatron and a Pred plot to nobble Megs, it's quite good. (And Furman shows quick old-school character beats, so there's Iguanus being a teacher's pet NCO while someone else cracks a joke at Spittor's expense and Spittor goes PBBBT)

THEN ALL THE OTHER TOYS SHOW UP. And unlike how this will go for the Titan Movie strips, it buries the leads.

Titan;s tie-ins are smart here: doing stuff the film won't, quietly dodging anything controversial, having straightforward characer-centred action with top artists. Add in sensible choices for reprints (another Movie and thjat cartoon kids will know), sensible features, and some nice on-brand design that isn't talking down, and this really is Titan taking their best step forward. It's a good value for money package. (Though it was really annoying waiting a month between reprint "parts" and I bet it was more annoying for kids, thoguht Gathering I think ends up working quite well that way)

Yup, agree with all the above. I took out a subscription on this based on the first issue (my first ever), as it felt like it was made by people who gave a hoot and had a good mix of features to cover a variety of ages. I do think the adult fan focus of some of the early editorials and competitions is a bit off-putting. It's nice to be acknowledged, but it's the young 'uns you need to keep interested and engaged.

Although I'd read the Beast Wars mini, I was happy to have it here as a back up. As Charles says Beast Wars, starts off well - I can't fault it sidestepping the events of the TV show as that story was done and dusted and what are you really going to add to the story of the TV cast we got on screen? Plus, given how IDW later handle Rattrap, I'm counting my blessings. The series does just get silly by shoehorning in all the toys. Annoyingly including ones whose existence requires on macguffins introduced in the TV show - specifically the Transmetal II driver - which really bugged me.

The Sourcebook thing of treating re-named toys as different characters was just ... disappointing. One of the most disappointing things I've ever read and a great example of how fan fiction can go wrong, by taking everything literally with no imagination. Boo.

And weird changes like "actually Injector KNOWS he's fugly" that just make the whole thing less fun.

(If they wanted to use BW2 characters despite them looking identical to other characters, why didn't they at least _invent_ some differences?)

It’s nice to see Geoff Senior art of modern Transformers, although the shiny computer colouring and blocky computer lettering kind of ruin it.
