Two Transformations (again!) this week.

First up, it's the Decepticon leadership battle round two in my look at ISSUE 4.

Then it's THE GENERATION 2 ANNUAL!

I don't know if anyone else found the same distribution problems I did, but I never saw a copy of the G2 annual in the wild anywhere. I didn't even know about the G2 annual's existence at all if not for the group knowledge of a certain organisation that I'm reasonably certain will be getting a mention in the discussion for G2 UK #5.

I recall they mentioned the annual could more easily be found in Littlewoods of all places. I looked, but must have been too late by that point.

The annual's cover is recognisable as being derived from a scene in "The Rebirth Part 3", although Grandreams almost certainly took the image not from the episode itself, but from the trade guide Sunbow used to sell the U.S. (and, by that point, Japanese) animated series.

Maybe as a license-holder Grandreams had access to this as part of their reference material?

I recall seeing the annual displayed in the Sutton branch of Dillons (a bookshop chain absorbed into Waterstones five years later), but that was about it, though I have to admit I didn't bother looking for it at the time having basically decided the end of the the US G2 was the point to let it all end at.

That very shop is where I nagged my mum into buying it for me!

You can see the early signs of what would come to be the cartoony modern style of “Transformers” animation (and animation in general) in Megatron’s face on that cover. This is not a face that has been carefully constructed from spheres and cubes and bisecting lines. This is not a face designed to be viewed from any angle, hypothetically. This is a flat, two-dimensional, cartoony drawing such as we might have seen in the Bruce-Timm-designed DC animated universe or more recently “Transformers Animated.”

I will take the energy of the TF Animated style over the awkward boxes look of Transformers Energon. But one of the great things about the franchise is that it constantly tries new things on multiple fronts. Don't care for the Bay movies? Enjoy some updates classic toys. Not a fan of Lost Light? Try Cyberverse.

That said, I respectfully disagree with your point. For one thing TF Animated was less of an evolution and more designed to be a deliberate contrast from the prior Japanese-originated series. For another TF Animated first aired 13 years ago so "recent" is pushing it. And finally all subsequent series have been CGI so TF Animated is very much the outlier in terms of 21st century Transformers media.

Only four years late but.
I'm pretty sure Felicity meant the actual medium of animation in general and Transformers animation in particular
Not the series TFA

And that TFA more resembles the angular flat design of Bruce Timm's Batman TAS and Superman series from the 90's
Instead of the listless flat CGI animated series of the past decade or so.

13 years ago... five years ago.

Animated was 18 years ago.

Sigh. Old.

That Bludgeon tries the same plan all over again is actually a work of serendipitous genius. How many times do the Decepticons *almost* win, but because Prime just got out of it, Megatron screams "retreat!" and the Cons run like cowards despite the fact that if they tried the same trick again with just a tweak or two, they'd win.

My point is Bludgeon knows the trick almost worked the first time but just failed because his newer troops took lead. Lure Prime out again with more superior troops like... err... Fangry... and you're going to have a better success rate perhaps.

And even if you don't... well he likes killing stuff. Technically it's the third time for him he's seen this as the massacre on Klo brought out Prime too.

Shame the Furman who wrote Regeneration One forgot that Optimus Prime blocks massacres on planets from Decepticons...
