Hated this story as a kid... Too much human focus and not enough robot action for my six year old tastes! Looking at it now it's aged quite well, but I still can't get my head around the Dinobots here, laughing and joking and saying "ooh 'eck". It's a bit jarring, even when compared to Furman's previous depictions of them in Wrath of Guardian etc.

Will Simpson seems to be using Grimlock's updated head design there, unusually for the comic.

My mother took me and a friend to see Hot Rod at a toy shop in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. I don't recall the date, but I was well acquainted with the character, so it must have been during the T2006 story run.

If he was the 'real' Hot Rod, it was the human-sized Micromaster version. Sadly, I can't recall much about the costume, but it was convincing to my seven year old mind. He had three silver tubes on each arm representing guns. I also recall seeing the orange fabric when viewed from the side, suggesting the back section and chest piece were attached separately.

He seemed more interested in talking to my mother than two 7 year old children (another TF-human love story?), then went outside to chase one of the shop workers around the pedestrian area.

I actually like the fact they're chilling during the bulk of the story.

@Alex:

I think Simpson is just drawing the toy, for whatever reason he never seemed to have been sent the revised final character models and was doing toy based art for the 84/85 characters right up till the end.

@Gareth: I'm jealous now.

Poor Grimlock ... a merciless beatdown is coming his way. I found it rather upsetting as a child because Grimlock was my favourite Transformer.

I'm a HUGE fan of the New Avengers! *(And not just because half of season 2 was filmed in Canada!) So, that reference was much appreciated. I like how Sludge has a crush on Joy. I think that as a kid at that age that was how I was with a girl I liked (well, kind of-we were best friends, but she didn't know I also liked her romantically), so it really stuck with me back then
