I really like this story and I am not ashamed to admit it :) The Short Circuit thing had never crossed my mind, but then I was reading it from distance in the Titan collections from ten years ago (bloody hell. ten years ago!), so I like that you have put it in context.
Okay, its a silly human story, but I buy into this one a lot more because Charlene is far more rounded and believable than a lot of Bob's other human characters and the whole thing is rather sweet. Even if Charlene does come over as very rude to poor old Wendell whom seems like a decent guy (this also very much mirrors my experience with girls growing up!). Even Robot Master starts to come into his own in this story and the pursuit by Ravage is very well done.
Plus! Herb Trimpe! The art on Transformers by the likes of Perlin and Delbo* I always find very stiff and lifeless, so I always liked it when the US book got some more imaginative artists on.
*Why do all his robots and humans lean off to one side all the time?
Oh, I'm going to have a lot to say about Delbo when we get there (though as with most of the US artists, Yomtov didn't help).
Fully agreed this is a fun story, even if I find some aspects of Charlene's character arc a bit odd (as I'll discuss next week).
this story ..eh
so far i managed to defend budianksy more eclectic stories
and foudn merits in even shootitng star and the first half of rock and roll out which is damn good its just the second half that lets it down
this one however ?
i got nothing
it leaves me totally cold
i generally skip iy because it does nothing for me
and the part with skids being soaped down is meaningless fluff
thats the nicest thing you can say about this comic really
budiansky has done worse comics down the line sure but i cant say i enjoyed this one or even found it much " fun"
and i like jose delbo's art !
in my opinion delbo's usa output is far better then seniors which was very flat and geometrical ( his scorponok looked silly ) yomtov's crayon colors also didnt help much with seniors art
seniors art is a lot better in the uk comics
I think Delbo did very good "Mad" Trasformers (and as a result Rhythms of Darkness saw him go out on something of a high). The problem is an awful lot of his sane robots had the empty vacant eyes that suited Galvatron so well... He did have a funny thing about waists as well.
Though his Reg Zero work (despite the fact he's clearly been given the segment with the least actual Transformers in) was actually pretty good, so maybe the colouring is what mainly screws it up? I'll be talking more about that when I get to the Movie Special as some of Springer's original art from that surfaced a few years ago and in B&W it just looked so much better than it does in the comic.
Stuart Webb. Who knows everything about nothing and not a lot about that.
