The darkness continues, but interspersed with black comedy as Blaster can't get himself thrown to his death despite all his best efforts. Plus one of the few Budiansky moments that has the potential to make a manly manly man well up, just a little.

I can count on one hand the times that Transformers has been profoundly moving. As much as the concept of big fighting space robots has captured my imagination, its rarely that its actually been affecting. The death of Scrounge, Scorponok*, Dinobot and Rewind have been the big defining moments of the franchise (by Christ do I hate calling things that), which is quite a small selection of moments. Its a shame in some ways that Transformers isn't more than it is and the need to retain some kid appeal and sell toys generally over-rides any attempt to flesh out their world and the disgusting things war can bring about.

This has to rate as one of the best Transformers stories ever told. Stuff 'dark', there's just truth here.

Yep, fully agreed on all points. Though I can see why they wouldn't overplay the sorrow of death all the time, it's nice to have those sad, affecting moments.

I loved this story, surprisingly dark for the time and the first time I heard the word 'smelt' ... as in 'smelting pool', not as in 'my mum told me that I smelt bad.' BTW, Stu, this is my new email address. My old account was closed down at short notice and I lost your email. Keep up the great reviews and shoot me an email sometime ... I've just finished a couple of new TF piccies (one of which features Soundwave with a boob job)

My one quibble is that the cover gives away one of the best moments in the story. Even now, as an adult, and knowing ahead of time what’s going to happen, I get choked up during that scene. “Feel what Scrounge felt!”
