Transformation 226: The Most Deadly Game.

It's an exciting week for anniversaries, Both The Prisoner and Star Trek turned 50, and most importantly from the perspective of this blog, Target: 2006 celebrated its 30th birthday. hurrah.

But back when Trek and The Prisoner were only 23, a story supposedly focused on Megatron actually introduces us to one of the key villains of the last years of the book. Not to Bludgeon you over the head with it, he's going to be very important.

It's all in my look at Aspects of Evil 4!

Easily the best part of Aspects of Evil. As an aside: my brother owns the original art for page 2 of the strip. It's a little yellowed having survived a fire in his flat about 7-8 years ago, but otherwise looking good.

I am also fortunate to own a page of original art from this story! I won it at a TMUK meet-up in Manchester by putting my fingers in a buzzer. Later, we discovered the hotel some of us were staying in was a knocking shop!

This now means my main memory of this story is not reading it back in the day but sitting in a hotel bar being very amused by lots of Happy Chaps coming in to meet The Same Women, vanishing for 20mins, then leaving again...

This was the very first issue I brought from a newsagents - as I've said before I was quite a late arrival to the comic (to the point where I seem to have arrived just as classmates were departing) but plead the defence of my local corner shop not stocking comics then (it does now) and rarely being around the stands in our town's John Menzies.

Both stories are quite strong and a good introduction though looking back I'm surprised I wasn't more put off by the dismissive attitude on the letters page (and I hope future Classics volumes will try to nail down just who was writing it in this period given the various comments and omissions). I guess that's testament to how strong the Aspects part is - this is Megatron as the rational calculating schemer who knows how to flush out a problem and is willing to sacrifice some of his own troops if needs be. And with hindsight he may even have spotted which Decepticons are the best to dispose of. This is the height of what Furman had been doing to the character so it's surprising that...

...he's portrayed the alternate Galvatron as ranting so much when the unspoken implication of recent stories is that it's Megatron's recent development that is ultimately the root cause of the future changing. (What, were you expecting a Two Megatrons comment?)

The Transformation page seems to have been written without the rest of the issue assembled to hand - was this a one-off mess in the office or was the page often written before the final draft of the rest was available?

Combat Colin is fantastic. Had the backlash against tabloid investigative journalism begun by this time or was Lew ahead of the curve?

Hey, I liked Fitor! He was the only Gobot toy I had. Someone at school gave him to me because he was falling apart. I liked his spaceship mode.

Chuckles is one of the characters whose comic and cartoon portrayals are very different. Although AFAIK his only animated appearance was in “GI Joe: The Movie,” there he was a big dumb guy who resorted to throwing a missile at a tank because he couldn’t figure out the controls (oddly, I can relate), whereas in the comics he was intelligent, devious, and actually kind of sinister.

I remember as a kid being very annoyed at Rodimus calling Megatron the "most evil Decepticon of all". I thought the whole thing with Galvatron was that he was Megatron to "the ultimate degree" so be definition he HAD to be more evil than Megatron.

I do wonder if they should have swapped the Megatron and Galvatron sections over. You could have then head an escalating level of "Decepticon leaders" and maybe you could have even had the Galvatron story flow directly in to the Unicron story.
