Transformation 195: Spool the Tape.

It's the last Budiansky hurrah for both Blaster and Jesse, all in a story with pirates, bikinis, improbable cameos and several rich people having their holiday ruined.

What is the mystery of the tapes? And is Blaster rusty? It's all in my look at:

Club Con! Part 2.

It's a bit of a mixed bag, isn't it? Although I must admit I'd completely overlooked just how much of a clanging, out-of-place retcon / continuity shafter the thing with sending the tapes to Earth was. You'd think that getting Optimus & Co back to help end Straxus's reign of terror would have occurred to someone! Also, if the Underbase was detectable to them whilst travelling towards Earth 400 years previously and at this point it still hasn't arrived - that is one hell of a powerful and accurate long-range scanner. Nice to see a letter from old TMUK stalwart Andy Dornan too - that guy wrote a LOT of fanfic, including the Nick Roche-illustrated A Rage In Hell.

You people get everywhere (I'm worried about my Eugenesis piece that will accompany issue 200, all the TMUKers who read are going to just out and berate my inaccurate assumptions!) ;)

I think we're all too old and tired to do any berating these days... I can proofread it for you if you like, not that I'm an expert but if you want anything cross-referenced I'll be glad to help!

I wondered if that was Andy! My favourites of his were always The Cyberformers (http://theunderbase.co.uk/wiki.asp?o=The%20Cyberformers) and Parallel Lives (http://theunderbase.co.uk/wiki.asp?o=Parallel%20Lives)

If there's anything I'm unsure of I'll ask, but my main focus at the moment is finishing the bloody thing! That's a big book.

This stuff really is dross isn't it? I don't recall the "treasure" part of the story either, perhaps I blocked it out because it was so illogical. Sales of the US comic must have been plunging at this point, the stories have been a string of duds, even "as a kid" I remember myself just tolerating the US stuff until the UK stuff reappeared. Even when it was a continuity car-crash it would usually be quite epic and exciting and robot-focused. That vibe of mania/constant hysteria - at the expense of any subtle kind of characterisation - would of course become obviously tiresome when reading RG1 as a grown man. But we can leave the Furman-bashing til later. When we were children he was saving us from this Bob Dross!!

Ps how do I get hold of this Nick Roche "rage" thing, I have never heard of it until now.

It may be on the (somewhat dormant)TMUK archive site www.theunderbase.co.uk - I'm really not sure! If you do find it, be kind - he was about 16-17 at the time.

Blaster remains Budiansky's greatest creation. I love him. It's not quite the same when he hasn't got Goldbug around to rip the piss out of though.

Any idea if Mark Clapham from Harrogate is Mark Clapham the Doctor Who author? He'd be about the right age.

I think, based on conversations around the other issues he had letters in and the TF references in his books, the general assumption is it is him.
