Transformation 176: Take That Sweet Joyride.

It's food for thought (and also food for food) as Dreadwind and Darkwing bring the Nebulos restaurant industry to its knees. Who could possibly save them?

Also HiQ unveils his unlikely scheme to deal with the food theft and Joyride is just a complete and utter dick.

All this and the return of Energy Giving Beefballs in my look at:

People Power! Part 1.

I recall n annual story making a big fuss of the power master nebulos having to eat lots, but after that I think this was quietly brushed under the carpet. It's such a bizarre idea to kid on the heads and guns and engines were humanoids. How did it arise? Seems to me like tyhe really should have just pretended they were small robots.

I suspect Bob would have agreed with you!

That is one of the few things, I think the Japanese cartoons did better.
All the master components are smaller robots.

The Japanese pretenders are also much better.
Too bad then that Masterfarce..err force, is a mech show with guest starring Transformers.

I've either forgotten or never knew how the Japanese cartoon handles the Powermasters - are they just like the Headmasters but in a different part of the body or is it somewhat more complex.

But it's one of the most awkward gimmicks to come up with an explanation for. Some kind of politically forced restraint requiring a chaperone to go into action might have just about worked in the Headmasters limited series but there wouldn't have been the space here to set that up on its own. And it's very hard to see how the other side could have credibly wanted to copy it.

So we get the fun of the food thieves. Did they ever come up with an explanation as to how Hi-Test and Throttle manage to cope later on?

In these days of 'obesity being a big problem' the whole 'needing to eat a lot to stay powered up' plot takes on new layers of humour that just weren't there before!

Every so often I fantasise about becoming a Powermaster as it would mean I would rapidly burn through all my fat and the diet I naturally crave would actually be helpful!

This weeks issue is "better" then the previous one, if only because Budiansky seems to be enjoying himself.
Kojara, ( the capital ) looks a lot bigger in this comic, a lot more futuristic and more importantly actually like a capital city.
I have no idea what happened in Headmasters, but Kojara went from reasonably big city to micro fortress.
Course that was the least of that mini's art issues.

But this time im not here to defend Delbo's art ( its fine ) or grouse about Yomtov's coloring, ( its not fine but at leass he broke his coloring pencils out instead of the crayons )
But to point out an,... ah inconsistency in the review.

Hi Test, did NOT create the Powermaster process. Throttle broke in to the facility and stole the research and theories.
Hi Test, actually made the theories work but as it later turns out so did Hi-Q.
So it's debatable that Hi Test is the better scientist.

The idea of Powermasters is off course totally ludicrous.
( It runs of the same idea that humans are great batteries, used in the matrix which was also rubbish. They should have gone with the original idea, that human brains were used as nodes in a biological super computer. )
It may have worked better if the engine components were small robots or if they were fueled by a super fuel source, ( nucleon ) but on the whole the idea is rather silly.
( And the Japanese god master version isn't much better, ...mecha transformers ...whoo )

But if we can accept Headmasters Targetmasters, Pretenders,
( Still better in Masterforce I wish they were the focus instead of the god masters and the tf mecha squad )
Power masters arent that much of a stretch.
They are at least better then Actionmasters, that's for sure.

And hey, this is the first time Oppie returns from being dead, it wont be the last time its a hobby for him nowadays.
But here are the even so humble beginnings, along with the return of Optimusu two parter in the cartoon.

@Tim:

In Masterforce the Powermasters were indeed basically the same as their take on the Headmasters, the little guy controlling the big mecha. The main difference was that, as with the Headmaster Jrs, they were humans rather than tiny Transformers.

Pretty much.
The big difference and reason why I dislike Masterforce so much, is that the main cast are all humans.

The robot bodies are empty shells, controlled by humans via "transectors"effectively reducing Transformers to mecha and guest stars in their own series.

If i want to see mecha i'll watch Robotech or Gundam not Transformers.

More Delbo greatness, plus his best inker Hunt, plus Oakley lettering!

“Shoulders” Shaun is the star player? Last time it was “Icebox” Ike! Maybe “Icebox” Ike is the William “Refrigerator” Perry equivalent of the Titan Beefballs and could join Action Force!
