Shockwave plays at being a chef, Ratbat is deeply annoyed at everything and Walter Barnett can't keep track of how many Throttlebots he has in his suitcase. Plus, Spike shows his dad what he has on under his mac.

All in my look at:

The Desert Island of Space! Part 1.

I first read this thanks to Denyer back in around 2001/2. It was mana from heaven to reading these long defunct comics, but it did nothing but assure me I did the right thing in cancelling my comic subscription at the time. Blaster seemed to have had a personality change. Yes, he was still being heroic, but whiny-bitch heroic, and that’s cartoon Rodimus’ job, not Budiansky’s hard-as-nails, Smelting Pool Straxus-Kicking Blaster!

‘Young Buster’ in the photo at the top of this page felt like a massive finger to the comic character. Look at his Marvel Spiderman generic features, he’s nothing like the Buster of earlier issues. This whole story left a bad taste in my mouth. Thank god for the zombie stuff that’s on its way soon!

Oh, a spam post (the one I've just deleted, not Master Slag), been a while since I've had one of those. The site must be going places.

The worrying thing with Buster is he should be pushing twenty at this point (or in other words, the same age as Spike), it's clearest sign of the US Comic using "Marvel Time" rather than the "Real Time" the UK stories aim for.

I too advantage of the FABULOUS HOLOGRAPHIC OFFER back in the day for that Visionaries poster. Words cannot convey just how exciting holographic stickers were back in 1988. Why I can't go into Asda and buy hundreds of them whenever I want makes me weep for the future.

In other news, the cover for #158 becomes a million times better if you assume the POV is that of the read seeing the comic on the newsagent shelf and Buster breaking the fourth wall and begging said read not to murder him ALMOST AS IF HE KNOWS HE IS NOW COMPLETELY REDUNDANT WITHIN HIS OWN UNIVERSE AND WILL BE DELETED FROM EXISTENCE.

SPECIAL TEAMS!

Shockwave cooking the fish is like the pizza way back at the Blackrock plant.

Those corrections are so badly lettered that it would have been preferable to leave in the mistakes.

That trenchcoat hides Spike’s armour reasonably well, although not as completely as the business suits on Messrs. K, B, and L at the Z Foundation.

Delbo did tend to copy the model sheets sometimes but that had an up-side in that the characters were on-model, looked good, and came as close as the comic ever came to looking as good as the cartoon.

I liked “Visionaries” when it came out, but in the decades since then my threshold for fantasy has gotten lower. I wouldn’t be as interested in adventures taking place in a post-apocalyptic quasi-medieval magic0using world now as I was 30 years ago. There is some science fiction and technology in it though, and the animation in the cartoon is good.

I wish I’d seen that particular “Combat Colin.”
