Transformation 102: Bye Bye Morris.

This week sees the beginning of a really interesting and well done story arc for Shockwave, but also the inglorious end of the soon to be totally forgotten Professor Morris plot.

Also: Your chance to be a Marmiteer.

All in my look at:

Fallen Angel! Part 2.

Was Marmite really that desperate that they had to resort to such gimmicks to lure children into consuming the stuff?

How does Furman manage to forget what Centurion is in just five months? Though I wonder if his correspondence with Budiansky had revealed that III were still on the active use list and so Morris's crusade couldn't be brought to fruition in the meantime. Otherwise yes this is just a battle to move pieces into place for the long term. I guess by the time Galvatron was ready to seek revenge on the Dinobots they had disappeared into space for a year.

And that cover just doesn't work - the white around the Dinobots' heads makes it feel like they were crudely pasted on.

The cover got young Ralph very excited as it promised more astounding Senior glory. Alas, finding Anderson inside was a crushing blow. Nowt wrong with the art but I do agree it fails by following Senior.

Inhumanoids next week! Very exciting back in the day, that was, as well as leading to great bitterness!

It'll be interesting, when I get to the Swoop/Divebomb stuff, how much it feels like if they had to do a Swoop has a guilty secret from his past story that it couldn't have been about wrapping up the Morris stuff rather than trying to explain one line from The Icarus Theory.

Inhumanoids is something I have no memory of whatsoever. So that's going to be interesting.

Fallen Angel isn't one of the best UK stories. Although a relatively 'new' story for me (first reading a rather poorly scanned reprint in the Titan reprints over a decade ago), I still can't get into it. It just seems very messy and scrappy.

This is also probably one of the few times where the story would have worked better having one artist on the storytelling chores (the other being Wanted: Galvatron, Dead Or Alive which also has a similar Senior followed by slightly less dynamic artist problem),rather than two.

I'd never really thought about the lack of a Transformers Fan Club - certainly in the UK anyway. I suppose its because Marvel UK did such a good job of turning the Transformers comic into a fan portal with Stock Exchange and so forth that it didn't feel necessary.

The STARS thing was rubbish though. To add insult to injury, all the robot points ever got you in the UK was the Time Warrior watch (woo) , whereas our American and Japanese cousins benefited from mailaway preimums like Reflector.

I agree with Ralph again. The Anderson issue content following a cool Geoff Senior cover was a total letdown. I think this issue is a brilliant example of why Anderson's work is so naff; He draws fat, dumpy, detail-less Dinobots. Normally he does mostly fat, dumpy robots, with Ironhide, Ratchet & Wheeljack baring the brunt.

He's pretty good at drawing Galvatron, who is all sleek lines like a human, not boxy arms and legs like practically everybody else.

This is a top example of where the issue could have been ten times better if drawn by Senior or Will Simpson, who add weight and movement to their figures, the two things Transformers need most.
