Happy Halloween!

Though the spookiest thing this week is behind the scenes, as the single most forgotten Transformers comic IDW ever did reveals who hates the DJ in my look at Spotlight Blaster!

The thing that annoyed me the most about this issue was that in order to read it I had to find the Hachette partwork that it's in. Which turned out to be, of course, in the Drift book. Because, I mean, I guess it had to go somewhere...

But that very nicely helps to illustrate your point as to how this doesn't really fit in with the continuity that was established at all. They just couldn't figure out where to place it, so they ended up with the odds and ends. (Of which Drift is both.)

Which is a shame, because this is actually a really fun story. As a primarily Marvel-based fan of Transformers from the '80s it was always odd to see his cartoon counterpart, and so it was a nice idea to try and bring those two versions of the character together. Sure, Blaster's gritty, inner monologue is very much a Furman cliche by this point ("And that's why I'm digging... digging my own grave..."), but it works well in this story as it's actually a counterpoint to Blaster's public personality.

As you say, it's a surprise that this thread wasn't taken any further by any of the other writers. I guess they just didn't care that much about Blaster. No wonder he's so moody...

Blaster is the ultimate DJ. In the Smashy and Nicey getting sacked sense.

Really surprised you didn't mention Furman having Blaster and Soundwave fight each other in Regeneration One so as to 'tie this plot thread up' albeit in a different continuity. Regen One was full of that sort of thing (Scorponok vs. Grimlock, Jhiaxus as a scientist, Monstructor vs. Omega Supreme...).

Also you didn't point out the whole thing made it necessary to retcon a panel or two of Stormbringer since Blaster is in that but he can't be because according to this, he's LoST iN SPaCe! So they had to create a totally NOT BLASTER character called 'Bluster' who just looks identical to Blaster. Of course.

And yeah, you're right. Blaster is one of the great losses of IDW. Surprised he never had more of a role. But maybe we should be grateful as S**r S***r might have chopped him up on a random panel or M**e C***a might have just killed him off for shock value. Sometimes there's an advantage to being an anonymous character. Just ask Getaway. 😇

I'm not going to bother keeping track of non speaking continuity error appearances, unless it's funny. But good catch!

In honest truth, it's arcane by anybody's standards.

I just think it hilarious that a story that doesn't fit the continuity of the time and doesn't actually end up meaning anything with a character who is barely used again ending up forcing IDW editorial to 'invent' a character.

Now I wonder, jumping ahead a bit, do they do the same when they refer to Bumper...
