It's been the long year of spin-offs, crossovers and volcanoes. Not to mention a teddy bear.

I asked you not to mention that.

But here we are at the final regular issue of 1987, a Christmas treat with a twist. Be sure to join me on the weekend when I cover the Annual and specials of the year as well. This might just kill me.

Well I had never thought of the 'Unicron did it' explanation. That actually works...
1987 may not have been as hot as 1986 objectively but the strong power of nostalgia stops me being fully objective. One thing we will lose in 1988 though will be the fun of having the back-up strip change from time to time as it's Action Force all the way. Nnngh.

Ah, 1988, the year I stopped getting the Transformers comic, but that is yet to come...I seem to recall the Pretenders debut story and maybe a little beyond that in real time, but I certainly had stopped before the return of Optimus Prime. So, while I have read the back-issues since, a lot of your insights on these issues will either be fresher to me, or else not resonate as much as I didn't read the source material when I was younger.

@Ralph: The Unicron thing popped into my head as I was writing it. Sometimes I'm accidentally quite clever.

@Harry: So you're saying that as soon as I started reading the book it became shit? :(

1987 is as far as I am concerned a pretty strong year. Stronger then say 1989, or 1990, where the gimmicks are bogging down the line and the toys become more and more gaudy and simplified.

1987 straddels a line between perfect, and to many gimmicks and has the first introduction of the masters, ...whatever you feel about them .
1988 goes over the top with all that, but is still better the 89 or 90.

Regarding the comic at hand.

Fluff nothing more, I dont particulairly like Starscream that much.
In fact, I loath him, because he has become a cliche and a parody of himself. ( he even has a tvtropes page http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheStarscream )

When he is around, you just know he wil try to backstab Megatron
and ...urgh seen it all before.

This Story came before all that and G1 cant be blamed but The starscream trope does taint my view of it.

So any story with Starscream in the lead, usually has me roll my eyes gritt my teeth and a fervent desire to get through it as fast as possible.

Headmasters ends rushed and drops the resoluition as a damp squib, but its still a better story then whats waiting for us.
