This week, it's the first ever depiction of the first time Megatron and Starscream met.

It's so homoerotic that Soundwave starts rubbing himself.

All this and the secret of cassettes as I look at Megatron: Origin Issue 3!

This is another issue that continues to underwhelm, unimpress, and other words that mostly start with an "un" prefix.

The most baffling thing about this issue is where the story chooses to end. I'm reading Hachette's collected version of these, so I have to guess where each issue ends - the logical point for this story was with Megatron's capture. The "Starscream going to tell all" plot seems like a much lesser cliffhanger by comparison, especially given that, even back in the day and reading this for the first time, you could guess what was going to happen.

But yeah, this is pretty unimpressive (see?), with Megatron's character development not really developing or providing him with any character. With hindsight, if you take the backstory that Roberts gives him then this is essentially the conclusion of his tragic fall, as he gives into the very violence and oppression that he was once fighting against (provided you're very generous with how you put the stories together in your head, that is). As it is, his journey from (presumably) being shocked and appalled at his first kill to this is too jarring and unexplored to make any sense. As a series meant to explore the titular character's backstory, it's massively unsuccessful (there's another).

The art, as you say, is also terrible. Whether it's down to the art itself, or the colouring, it's mostly just a confusing mess that's really hard to follow. There's a moment at the end of Sentinel's far-from-touching tribute speech where he does... something. Powering up or arming up maybe? But what he's actually meant to be doing is nearly impossible to figure out from the art. Whatever the source of the incomprehensibility of the art in this issue, it really shouldn't have made it past the editorial stage.

In all, this is a pretty terrible miniseries. And I remember back in the day desperately trying to like this, but being ultimately very unsatisfied (there we go). Still, I suppose it could be worse - it could be an Avengers crossover...
