Welcome!

It's the start of what will hopefully be a fun and long running look at the original IDW continuity.

And by long running, I mean the first one alone is very long. But it's got a lot of set up to do, so meet the most relistically named man in history and the six fingered girl as I look at Infiltration Issue 0!

And a merry Christmas to you all.

Haha, good stuff! I’ve been looking forward to this!

I’ve always loved the idea behind these issues, conceptually, even if the execution is a bit off (or starts falling apart as the issues progress.)

The idea of having Transformers invade Earth (in secret) returns them to their ‘robots in disguise’ roots, and with the whole government conspiracy stuff thrown in for good measure, this could have been sooo good.

The first issue is actually a really intriguing set-up. The O’Nion thing doesn’t bother me so much, probably because there’s a footballer called Luke O’Nien (close enough), so the name probably feels more real and less ‘out there’ to me than it would to someone who’d never encountered it before.

Anyway, Merry Christmas, and I look forward to reading these every week! Top stuff!!!

I hope Luke had a better time of it!

Merry Christmas.

FINALLY finding time to comment, when I'm sat at a computer and not clutching my phone in one hand and a feeding/sleeping baby in the other...

But yes! It begins! Been looking forward to this read through. And I am kinda doing it.

Back in the day I remember being uncertain about IDW acquiring the licence because I was one of the few people who'd been enjoying the Dreamwave ongoing, and was upset that it'd been cancelled. Also I wasn't sure if Furman was going to be able to bring anything new to the table. And also I wasn't sure whether I should get invested and risk getting my heart broken again. So I was certainly wary of a new ongoing series...

It's hard now to remember how I felt about this at the time, but I think I was at the least intrigued by the return to the core concept, and the actual utter lack of robots in the issue actually appealed to me. And that splash panel of Thundercracker! I was definitely starting to get drawn in...

Now, in retrospect, I love it. After such a long ride and ending up with such a convoluted continuity (which is par for the course for any comics series) it's nice to go back to the clean reset and see how it all started. And I'm certainly looking forward to getting through the rest of them.

Of course, the big consequence of taking the risk on this new series is that it eventually lead to my getting married and ending up creating the afore-mentioned Scraplet, so it kinda paid off in the end...

And yet you wouldn't call your son Hunter O'Nion.

I'm totally glad you're doing this as I've just recently started re-reading IDW from the chronological start... so different to you but yet still weirdly in parallel.

I honestly didn't think much of Infiltration but that's because I ravenously dislike decompression in comic books. I think it works even worse with Transformers. And yet when James Roberts gets his hands on 'made for trade' stories, he turns it into an art. But I'm getting ahead of myself here.

What surprises me about Infiltration is that the whole 'robots in disguise' thing didn't seem to catch on with fans as much as stuff like Stormbringer. I love the idea of Transformers hiding amongst us. If they're all 'hanging out' for everybody to see, then why bother with Earthern vehicle modes? And yet some of the best Transformers often have, indeed, earthern modes.

I just think Furman's desire for Robots in DISGUISE was right on the money but perhaps the decompression format worked against his talents. That said, again, getting ahead of myself, I do love these early months of Furman IDW and I think they're perhaps a tad underrated. I'm eager to see how you view 'em!

Also also... I freaking love Verity. She's easily my favourite human character from the franchise. I kind of liked her from the get go. Didn't care for Hunter and still don't. Jimmy... meh. He's fine but... well I don't want to spoil future stories for the blog. I'm a Verity mark though.

At least we get humans like Verity, Marissa, Jimmy and the GI Joes and not female strippers who go around with trench coats and hatred of aLL RoBoTS!!! (Err although I inexplicably like her as well, though your blog has exposed how badly written she is! Thanks for that.)

I'm definitely team Verity by the end of the series as well.
