Revisitation 98: Bang Bang, He Shot Me Down.

This week, it's the biggest Revisitation yet as I look at a comic that asks more serious and complicated questions than any Transformers story to date.

Plus, it has time for a Shaun of the Dead gag.

It's all as I apply the right amount of pressure to my look at Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 5!

I'll give a good and proper long winded reply later on. ( when I'm not sick) but i spotted an error in the review.

" It’s raining and dirty and Springer is not a happy volunteer for being shot through the middle by a grumpy Impactor as he does actually have any circuit dampeners."

Shouldn't that be "doesn't actually have any circuit dampeners ?

Well, it's depressing indeed that Last Stand... is now over (finished, etc) because it is indeed the last properly good run that we'll get for a while. But on the plus side it did its job at the time - which for me was to keep me reading Transformers long enough to stick around for these new-fangled "More Than Meets the Eye" and "Robots in Disguise" comics to show up. The gap between this series and its sequel is also quite surprising in hindsight - and not only because of how very different my life was when this one ended and the follow-up started, and the consequences that would spring from that. But that's me, and not the comics.

And this is a great comic. I was astounded at the time - and remain astounded - that what is essentially an advert for kids' toys (although, yes, they weren't really at the time this was written, not directly, but you know what I mean) should get this sophisticated a treatment. But I'm very glad it did.

You've covered the main ups and downs (of which there are very few) of this issue already, and all I can really do is agree. This is a very good issue and a very good and satisfying conclusion to the series, which ties things up well enough that even if there were some changes along the way you don't really notice. It's also high on action, has some great art, and shows most of the characters behaving in various degress of "not great" ways, without ever passing judgement, leaving that instead to the reader. (Which also ends up doing a good job of not leaving the reader with a feeling that the authors have any particular viewpoint - they're just telling a story. Something that will become more difficult to disentangle in some later series.)

So yeah, a great series, this one. The only real problem with it is that it took editorial so long to realise that maybe, just maybe, this is the direction the comics should be going in. Oh well. On the plus side, they did, and that'll be something to look forward to. Now let's buckle up - it'll be a ride...
