This week, Thundercracker only hurts when he laughs as he discovers the joys of American network comedy.

Plus, Magnus is not happy and Hot Rod lets Swindle give him a promotion as I look at the Costa Ongoing Issue 4!

This is indeed a surprisingly not-terrible issue. I wouldn't say it's great, but it's not bad, either. And I think that's because the Thundercracker stuff bookending the issue helps you to forget that not a lot else is going on here.

But, to give Costa credit, he does indeed do a couple of good things here, as you mention - the Thundercracker story, and the explanation of Rodimus' name change. I used to not think back on the Costa run too badly (although never thinking it was good compared to the other series to come), and maybe that's because what stays in the mind are these few, key good moments, with the rest melting away because it's just.... not memorable. It's only on re-reading that I'm reminded of how terrible it is.

So, not a bad issue. Let's see if he can keep the quality up. I'm fairly sure that that's going to turn out to be unlikely...

So, I don't usually comment things, but hey! I've been reading Revistation since finding the piece on Spotlight Arcee, and the series has been really interesting for me! I experienced IDW very differently from others, since after enjoying Bumblebee I decided to go read "the comics when Megatron becomes an Autobot" I had heard about since that seemed like what I would enjoy the most. But instead of doing what any sane human would do and start from phase 2, I instead started from phase 1 with the reading order from the collection hardbacks.

I don't remember too much of my first experience other than it taking me a full year for most character names to get into my head, but one of the things I do remember is this issue, since it was the moment Thundercracker became one of my favorite Transformer up to that point. I wasn't really that aware of quality back then, since I was mainly focused on getting to grips with this mad series as a whole, but the framing device with this issue, was the first step to making this goof one of my all time favs.

And while looking back, there is a ton of stuff Costa messes up and just doesn't write well, his stuff with Thundercracker really is the best thing he came up with, so at least there's that.

Have to say though, as someone who did come in late, it's very fascinating hearing about what reactions to all this at the time. It's probably common knowledge for a lot of people in the fandom since they were there, but since it's not on the wiki, I didn't have much idea about most of this.

Keep up the great work on these though! Thought you might like a comment in preparation for the great Costa slog you're going to be going on soon.
