Revisitation 117: One Girl, One Kup.

This week, the monster mash comes to an end as Kup finally discovers what Prowl did to him (for the first time) and Galvatron takes up cricket (the monster) as I look at Transformer Infestation issue 2!

Plus, an Addendum on the conclusion of the main Infestation series!

In this instance, I'm glad that reading this continuity in chronological order meant reading Infestation 2 before the first one. It's way more of a fun read.

The most memorable part of this story for me is Roche's art, which is stunning as usual. It carries this event for me. The story itself was okay imo, although I wasn't a fan of certain elements, especially after knowing what comes much later. Kup learning the truth & his later fate was undone, and Galvatron's characterization goes completely at odds w/Barber's portrayal. Not to mention, bringing back the Heart of Darkness. That last one is more petty on my part admittedly, I just never liked any part of IDW that dealt w/the Dark Universe.

As far as crossovers that nobody asked for go, it certainly felt like this one could've been left forgotten to obscurity, but luckily this time it was a lot more centered and isolated to the main continuity than the previous Avengers crossover was. There are certainly worse tie-ins ahead, this one just happened to be actually readable for me.

As you say, this issue was originally very annoying to me, a reader since Issue #0, largely because I didn't pick this series up when it was first printed because I didn't think it'd have any bearing on the main story. And I was then very confused when I discovered however much later it was that Kup had died. After that I made a note to pick up every crossover. Which I guess means that it worked. Damn IDW and their perfect use of capitalism...

Not, aside from Kup's sacrifice, that I was missing much though. The art really is the only good thing about the issue, the rest is just... there. And much of a muchness, really - the "stopping an unstoppable horde via the use of space magic technology" resolution wasn't particularly new or interesting even back then. It's basically everything I was expecting it to be (not complimentary) and aside from the Kup bits I do feel justified in my decision not to buy it at the time. Although I do still feel annoyed, so...
