Please Release Me, Let Me Go.
Escape/In Word and Deed. January 2012.
One last bullet in the chamber, Fisitron. Bang.
In order to get through all the Wreckers hardback extras in just five issues, I’m covering two comics together here, even though the first is the only one of these bonus comics to be two pages.
But doing both together makes a certain degree of sense as they both serve a similar function. The hardback came out close to two years after the series had started, enough time for Nick Roche (who writes and draws both) to not only have heard feedback and had time to listen to the fans but have also seriously started to think about follow-ups. The actual sequel would still be a few years away (and go through a lot of ideas and permutations), but these two comics especially out of all the extras, are about seeding Sins of the Wrecker.

The first, Escape, also follows up on Dead Men’s Boots by dealing with the fact the Guzzle plot kind of fizzles out in the main series.
So, in the aftermath of issue 5, Guzzle and Impactor are now a team, with Guzzle having been captured by a group of Decepticons who have him strung up in a device designed to turn him into fuel, alongside a group of organics (and using fleshlings as an energon substitute is an idea Nick will return to many years later).
Impactor turns up to rescue him, and they fight their way out… But Guzzle is borderline feral, delighting in killing and has reached a point where “Where there’s no count like a head-count.” And though Impactor doesn’t like it, especially when during the fight the organics get caught in the crossfire and killed (that it’s Decepticon fire that hits them feel like it might have been a Hasbro mandated line), but he also knows he’s succumbing as well, and the more and more he wades into the kill like Guzzle, the more there is no escape.
This is probably the least talked about of the bonus stories, and also the darkest. But it’s intentionally uncomfortable and very clearly sets up the arcs for both Guzzle and Impactor in the sequel.

In Word and Deed is shorter and simpler, but hugely important, and confirms something that a lot of fans had speculated about in the interim since the miniseries finished: That there was a second data slug that Verity now has.
On a subway train, the now back on Earth Verity muses on her struggles to say goodbye, and her damaging obsession with “uber-nerds.” She left a letter for Jimmy and Hunter when she went off with Magnus, and a letter for “Uncle Magnus” when she went off with the Wreckers (with a nice touch in Magnus’ only reaction to be to immediately have her room cleaned), and now she’s writing one final goodbye, to “Fisitron.”
Because for all the weapons he made, he left the biggest bomb till last, the copy of the Aequitas trials data.
Which is not only the kick-off for the entire sequel, but even the line about her knowing nerds being so damaging to her will be given more weight by it.

And that’s these two stories in a nutshell: Pieces being put into place for a story that will still take years to get to, but still with style and mystery to them. They’re not the strongest of the extras, but they are doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Oh, and apparently there's a Heroes reference in here somewhere. If you've watched Heroes at some point since 2006...
Please back away from me slowly.
Next week, Optimus finally has his chat with Spike.
