The Heart's Filthy Lesson.
Addendum 15: Infestation 2 issue 2. April 11th 2012.
Stop being such a crybaby. It’s only a tumour.
In what is one of the first major hiccups for Revisitation, it turns out there was no point whatsoever in reading these framing issues to the main Transformers part of Infestation 2. That story was completely standalone with no connection to this other than the excuse for the Lovecraftian horrors having gotten out there in the first place. Reading the lead series adds nothing to it.
Indeed, none of the franchises this crossed over with seem to have contributed anything to it, not even a one panel cameo as in the first issue (and the conclusion of the original Infestation).
The only other property to appear is one that wasn’t involved in the wider crossover, Dange Girl. Who shows up, has a sequence of trying to steal a painting with something she claims is vital to the future of Earth whilst fighting monsters… Only for that also to have absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the issue.
So, getting through it quickly: Amanda reveals the “Artifact” is in fact a tumour like creature removed from H.P. Lovecraft himself, that Bools has to swallow to take to Cross. Britt then rips out Cross’ heart to remove the articillia energy, with Amanda then merging the heart and the parasite and taking it into the Lovecraft dimension to seal it up once more. But, handily, Cross has just enough magic left in him to go on not needing a heart.

Despite being the same writer and main artist, it’s not quite as horny as the first issue, and that’s about the nicest you can say about it. As well as Danger Girl, there are scenes that don’t really have anything to do with anything but giving some of the CVO regulars something to do (Britt’s whole diversion to a convention, the two other characters’ whose names I have no desire to consign to memory getting into a fight) that, if you’re not deeply invested in the CVO world and keen to see everyone, fall flat and are pointless.
Which leaves us at the end of an underwhelming event all round, despite the early promise of the Transformers side of things. So, it’s something of a relief there wouldn’t be an Infestation 3, and, indeed, probably better for the world, CVO seems to have died on the vine, a victim of IDW’s eternal struggle to not depend on just licenced titles that could be yanked from them at any point.
Next week though, we’re back to a comic there will be a lot to say about, as things get political in the second issue of Robots in Disguise.
