This week, it's the last quiet little issue before things really kick off and get interesting. But there's still some interesting tidbits to be found with the return of Staz and the exit of Scorponok.

Plus, I open with a few thoughts on more recent events. Thanks to Becka for giving that the once over before I finished it.

It's all in my look at SCORPION STING!

Here's a weird thing: Scorponok gets a profile _next_ issue, one that adds to this strip by revealing he's actually a sneaky sod that pretends to be mindless so you'll underestimate him. And that goes really well with 'we thought he was just a dumb robo-animal and now HE'S HUNTING US' plot, so why's it in the 'wrong' issue??

It's also odd Lennox and his regular Joes aren't in this - they're film people with a score to settle with Scorponok and Furman's never using his squaddies again. Personal preference, a rights issue, editorial decision? (It's possible the team Titans thought Lennox and Epps weren't that important cos they're just the soldier bods, the same way they decide Banachek is the Sector 7 guy that will come back and not Simmons)

Pity we'll never get a Transformers Classic reprint of these and interviews on this! There's a lot of interesting oddities in vol.1 of Titan.

Hi Stuart - have to say, that’s a really good take on the Furman thing. As with Spotlight: Arcee, I think his issues are born out of ignorance and stubbornness, rather than any sort of maliciousness. I re-read his blog post the other day, which he wrote when the Arcee stuff blew up - rather than hold his hand up and say, “Oh my goodness, I didn’t intend for it to be read that way, I’m so sorry, I’ll try to do better in future”, his defence was just, “nope, sorry, I’ve had some positive feedback from some women therefore the issue must be that you just interpreted it wrong, you’re entitled to your opinions but I don’t agree.”

I wouldn’t mind his problems so much if he seemed genuinely repentant and mortified by the fact that he’d caused offence, but the hand-wavy way he deals with the criticism is, to me, far more disappointing than the original offense. How can we learn and better ourselves if we can’t take on board constructive feedback?

"So, very quickly, and with the above provisos, I certainly don’t personally think Furman is a Matt Moylan foaming at the mouth bigot."

Do you mean the rugby player or the webcomic artist? Because I haven't heard of either of them being bigoted.

Probably because I haven't heard of the latter in years and I don't follow sports at all.

The webcomic guy. He's the full Comicsgate.

No idea what Earth Wars is, nor do I understand why it needed a "Valentine's Day Special". Without the full screen caps, I can't see the full story, but from what you've written, it seems Furman is stamping on the idea of robots having deep, emotional relationships.

I can understand why that's upset people - the characters must have some relationships with each other to give a crap about each other(cf. Smokescreen & Inferno in the Legacy of Unicron, Dreadwind & Darkwind in ... just about all their Marvel appearances). So that's just a silly thing to put out there. Maybe it's the question of 'love' and what that means to us humans, given that Transformers largely look, sound and act like our male sex. A topic that needs more than what looks like a glib online gaming platform to properly get into, so why even bother?

I'm more puzzled that someone thought this was totally fine to put out, given how reactive and noisy social media can quickly become, for good or ill.

Overshadows what I was going to write about this weeks look at the comic, anyway. Which I think at this stage I was hoping would get better, as the UK originated strip never felt like it had much to say and feels a bit like no-one's really interested. The Prequel back up remains awful and pointless, leaving only Beast Wars to prop things up. I never really thought much about needing to see the TV cast in the BW comic. I was quite happy seeing all the other characters who didn't get to be on telly :)
