As you can see on the left, Buster is as confused as anyone about the exact point of Circuit Breaker other than to give a sex starved artist something to perve over. But it's not just about the virtually naked chicks as Jazz becomes a fly dude and Shockwave tries out a new colour scheme.

I think the first annual is probably best handled as a single post. It's got an awkward layout with several stories split across the book for whatever reason and trying to diffuse it back into the individual stories would lose some of that effect.

I wouldn’t say Budiansky is *everyone’s* second-favourite writer, nor by a considerable margin. I prefer him to Furman, though it should be noted that as a North American reader my primary exposure to Furman was in issues #56-80 of the comic. While I greatly enjoyed his first two story arcs, with the return of Megatron and the finding of Primus in Cybertron, after that things went downhill. Only now do I have sufficient amounts of nostalgia to look back fondly on the Matrix Quest, and everything after that is pretty depressing to me. Between the sudden worship of Grimlock as the cool character (and even worse, at the expense of Prowl), the Decepticon leadership battle, and Optimus surrendering to Scorponok and his followers hating him, it becomes a long slog to the end.

However, to end on a positive note, I really do like those first several issues, from the beginning of the return of Megatron arc to the one with Prime saving Hot Rod from the rogue Guardian on the moon. And I really liked “Brute Force” too! And the Matrix Quest has grown on me.

Not for the first time I find myself drifting into comparing Transformers with Doctor Who. Bear with me here kids.

Furman's last US run feels a bit like JNTs last run on classic Who. Like the last two seasons of Who, US (and by definition UK) Transformers has looked back to the past to see what worked, updated it, and given it a fresh lick of paint (Galvatron, Shockwave, Megatron, Unicron, Grimlick, Ratchet, Starscream, the Classics characters - all popular characters returned front and centre for Furman's last run). Indeed also like Doctor Who's last seasons we get a lot of stuff added to the mythos (Is the Doctor a founder of Gallifrey? Who were the previous Matrix bearers? Was Rassilon good? Is Primus good?).

But like Doctor Who's last seasons, it proved critically a darling yet commercially, poison. Like Transformers, mainstream appeal had long worn off and the target audience moved on. The only people hanging on were loyalists and die hard, or those who had seen things they recognised but being done justice (Remembrance of the Daleks = Galvatron, Shockwave, the Classics).

And now many fans would hold McCoy's Doctor Who as some of the best. Absolute best. The end of Marvel US / UK the same - some of the best, ever. And yet many people LOATHE McCoy, all of McCoy, and the same for Furman's last run - even though it's a fandom minority, truth is these runs were mainstream flops.

So I'm not surprised to hear you say you don't like it even though most fans would say Furman's US run is probably the most consistent best of the US Marvel (his UK stuff is probably better though!)
