Time Wars really starts hitting the high notes are we discover Scoruge's sympathetic attitude towards mental illness; meet Roadbuster's little friend; discover the new interior at at Fortress Sinister and discover how much Springer cares about Sandstorm.

All this plus a very telling editorial as I look at Time Wars Part 5!

In a story filled with stand-out horrific imagery, the shots of Cyclonus strung up and Galvatron missing half his face are two that have really stuck in the mind since childhood. Top stuff from Dan Reed here.

Agreed, this is some excellent dark artwork. And some quite mature themes of both mental illness and the mess of changing your own history.

It's also a neat touch that Furman addresses how Shockwave could have continued to be the Decepticon leader on Earth in the UK stories when all the troops we saw under him have since been seen amongst Ratbat's forces. (Maybe Starscream popped by the Fortress and took them with him, explaining how he became Ratbat's deputy so quickly.) I don't have the issue to hand but did they go one step further of dimming Shockwave's eye? I seem to recall a great effect later on.

"Alan Bayles from Durham suggests a Secret Wars III"

There had just been one in the US, though it's a truncated story in Fantastic Four that saw the Beyonder learn he isn't actually the most powerful being in the universe but a mere cosmic cube. It's a slapdown of Jim Shooter after his departure from Marvel, ordered by editor Ralph Macchio.

And Stuart you're a swine for not scanning that panel of the Baroness!

Yeah, that editorial is really odd. I mean, it's not as if Flames of Boltax ends on a cliffhanger or anything - there's no reason Time Wars couldn't slot in between Boltax and Cold War as originally published, is there? In an attempt to clarify the continuity, Furman's actually just making things more confusing!

As you say, the sole purpose of this paragraph would seem to be a dig at Budiansky - what other possible reason could there be?

I think this is definitely the best installment of Time Wars, it also has many of the most memorable scenes.

Considering the mess Time Wars is, that honestly doesn't say a lot.
Parts 2 and 3 could have been easily folded in to each other, with out missing a beat.
Especially part 2, which is superfluous complete with static art.

And part 1 is rather suspect as well with it's tiny cast.

I loved time wars, yes it was a confusing mess, I had no idea why ravage was underground, I'm still a little confused on the issue. I don't remember shockwaves troops deserting. I was confused why so many future autobots were old ones and why they started attacking their own comrades. But the violence, the utter visceral carnage and brutality thrilled my young teenage self.
As a kid I wasn't aloud to stay up late and watch violent films on TV and there was no internet. This was the the most violent escapism I'd ever seen and it was awesome!

By the way has anyone else noticed that some artists draw him having extended knee pads while others drawn said extensions as chaps?

I noticed that as a kid. I always preferred the Senior/Sullivan version. It's closer to the toy, looks more dynamic, and I can imagine him kneeing someone in the gut and it going right through them. The new Kingdom Galvatron figure had better have them....

That’s a good drawing of Roadbuster with the giant gun, and I like the Kirby dots forming in the barrel of the gun.
