Transformation 105: After the show, there's the Afterdeath.

This week it's the most infamous story of Uncle Bob's run, though the real controversial stuff won't kick off till next week. Till them, it's the world's biggest game of Top Trumps before Megatron and Optimus decide they'd rather be playing Suburban Commando instead.

All in Afterdeath! Part 1.

This Monday is the second anniversary of this insane project, so check back in then for the third dimension.

I'm amazed the Ricicles advert got away with such blatant phallic symbolism. But then it was probably over the heads of the target audience.

And the main story has its moments - clearly Bob was inspired by the Mutually Assured Destruction theory of stalemate but by the time this made print in the States let alone here the Cold War was moving onwards into greater détente. Still to take MAD, Tron and the trope of settling great conflicts with small scale battles is a bold mix. I think this is also the first time he's actually brought Prime and Megatron together for a fight, which if true says a lot about his restraint so far.

The next issue is a landmark for me in more ways than one...

Good point on this being their first Budiansky written fight, I was going to say issue 3 but of course, that wasn't written by Bob.

I'm not sure if that's a sign of his restraint or just plain old disinterest though.

I was at the British Library comics exhibition yesterday and one of the things on display was a Bob Monkhouse written kids comic from (IIRC) Tornado that was basically a superhero punching giant penises. Maybe all comic artists are just perverts?

Considering Yewtree, it's lucky that's all old Bob was up to!

I never noticed Captain Rik's penis until now. My life has been enriched.

I will also defend Afterdeath to the death. THE DEATH. It's brilliant, especially the second half in the next issue with the batshit mental insane shitfaced mindfuck that is Multiworld.

I'm afraid to say that come Part 2 you may be forced to commit suicide in order to save the story from my views on it...

There's always room for diverse opinions and reappraisals.

Oh and Captain Rik can be found on the second page of the Inhumanoids strip, lurking on a monitor.

This issue (#24 over here) is frustrating and depressing, but did not make me stop liking Bob Budiansky’s work on “The Transformers.”

I don’t mind the unrealistic portrayal of computers here. Not even Optimus Prime’s entire mind fitting onto what looks like a 5¼-inch 360K floppy disk!

It never occurred to me that Margaret might be hitting on Ethan Zachary. I assumed she was his supervisor, and she also seemed older than him. It’s a shame we never saw her again.

Something that makes no sense here (something *else*?) is Ethan's "Huh?" when he realises that there' something happening outside. As it's framed, it appears that what gets his attention is Megatron talking to Onslaught inside his cab, rather than the fence being ploughed through two panels earlier. Some very strange selective hearing there..
