This week, Starscream finds an unexpected new fan and Nova Prime wants you to meet his firends in the traditional Marvel way, all as I look at the peaceable Robots in Disguise Annual!

There's one thing that really annoys me about this issue, and it's that I hate homages to the past, espeically in the Transformers franchise, where undying and unending fealty to the Sunbow-era cartoons is the order of the day, preventing the franchise from moving on and trying anything more radically different or interesting. So I hate that they go back and emulate the start of the Marvel comics so much... because I love it and am absolutely lapping it up. I am just a massive hypocrite.

In fairness, the stylistic choices here are surface level, really, and do actually serve the plot, which is itself more, much more, than just homages, So I;'m not really being that much of a hypocrite, Or so I tell myself.

But that aside, this is a great Annual. Yes, there is the nostalgia-ticklingness of it all, and I do love that they decided to use that Marvel style to show the past, but also there's the insight into what things were like under Nova Prime's rule, and how he came to be the Prime. This will continue to get more confusing as time goes on, mind you, but here it does nicely set up the world that ends up birthing the second great Cybertronian civil war.

The present day stuff is good, too. The conceit of Metrotitan ending up on Cybertron isn't so unexpected, but his proclaiming Starscream, of all people, as being the chosen one was certainly unexpected, and will certainly end up having repercussions that will last until the very end of this series. Yes, again, things do end up becoming a lot less straightforward as time goes on, but Starscream ending up getting what amounts to a god's blessing isn't what anyone was expecting, and it's very interesting to see where that takes him.

So yeah, a great issue with this, with good artwork in both eras, a story that's bigger than usual and which justifies it being an "Annual" and one that's satisfying on its own, too, whilst also adding something to the larger arc. So good stuff, just making me more eager to see (well, re-experience) what comes next...

One of the best issues produced in post DOOP IDW. If not *the* best, certainly one of the top 3-5.

Good to see you back, Stuart :)

I was more into MTMTE than RiD at the time, but this issue made me start paying attention to RiD again. Loved the art (which really let the MTMTE annual down), enjoyed the flashbacks - going to have to look back and find Tailgate now.
